Frontier Aerospace, a Southern California start-up, has secured contracts to deliver two Astrobotic lunar landers with propulsion systems. In January, when the Pittsburgh-centered company awarded Frontier Aerospace a deal to develop axial engines, which has a 700-pound-thrust for the Griffin lunar lander, Simi Valley, California-centered Frontier Aerospace was already designing 10-pound and 150-pound thrusters for the Astrobotic’s Peregrine lunar lander. The Peregrine lander is expected to fly on the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Vulcan Rocket’s first flight in the late 2021. To move the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover of NASA to the moon’s the South Pole, the bigger Griffin Lunar Lander has been scheduled for deployment in 2023.

As per a February 16 press release, the Griffin lander will focus on Frontier Aerospace engines to navigate, reach lunar orbit and descend onto the lunar surface. This summer, Frontier Aerospace is expected to carry out the very first Griffin engine hot fire evaluations as well as offer flight-qualified engines to the Astrobotic in the year 2022.
